The EC Ozone Regulation was introduced to control and phase out the remaining uses of all Ozone Depleting Substances, such as R22 refrigerant.
R-22 is a greenhouse gas and the manufacture of it results in a by-product (HFC-23) that contributes significantly to global warming, however since the 1950’s it has been the most commonly used refrigerant in air conditioning systems.
Subsequently, the product has been banned, and since the 1st January 2015 it has been illegal to use R22 refrigerant to maintain or repair air conditioning systems in the UK.
The product was phased out over many years, with the first stage of the phase out starting in 2003 with a ban on production of R22 air conditioning systems.
Benefits to the phase out
New systems consume up to 50% less energy and produce higher outputs than R22 equipment. Your return on investment is fast, in some cases just 2-3 years, and you’ll get an immediate performance boost.
By replacing your R22 equipment, you will also gain greater control over your building’s temperature and cut your carbon emissions.
If you’re unsure if your air conditioning system is using R22, your system is old, or just in need of a good service and repair, get in touch and we will provide a no obligation quote or advice.
